  1. Website ratings: What’s happening on the Internet in general? Which websites are the most popular? Popular services include comScore, Nielsen/Netratings, Hitwise as well other tools like Quantcast and Alexa.
  2. Advertising: The ad industry needs to know how many ads are being served and whether they’re being clicked. Doubleclick is the giant of the field; the Atlas Network,24/7 Real Media and Right Media are other players.
  3. Web analytics: At each website, what is the user’s behavior? Are they arriving on the landing page? Do they bounce off (hit one page and go no further)? Can I tweak the persuasion process to improve the conversion rate? What’s their demographic and behavioral makeup? Customer satisfaction and tracking social media traffic also tie into this. Measurement tools and firms include Google Analytics, Omniture, Web Trends andCoreMetrics.

“Over time, online video has also become a bigger fixture in everyday life, garnering 19% of all internet users who use video-sharing sites to watch on a typical day. In comparison, just 8% of internet users reported use of the sites on a typical day in 2006.” — The Audience for Online Video-Sharing Sites Shoots Up | Pew Internet & American Life Project

“The Google idea is fantastic. But you can only do so much with text. It’s very good for transactions, but it is very poor for brands. It’s very good if you are trying to drive an action immediately, but it’s poor if you are trying to instill a desire that plays out weeks later. We need to develop a form of advertising that works as well online as glossy pages work in print. And we don’t have it yet. Again, it’s very early. This is only a couple of decades after the invention of the Gutenberg press and we’re trying to figure out what we’ve invented. But we will.” —Who needs newspapers when you have Twitter? | Salon News

“The math of profit is pretty easy, revenues minus cost. You do your best on the revenue side and if you are not making money you lower your costs. The problem is not that there isn’t money to be made online, it’s just that our costs are too high.” —Who needs newspapers when you have Twitter? | Salon News

“Tasks, not tech. Nichepapers aren’t about technology. They might use a blog post, vlog post, podcast, wiki, series of tweets, or a long-form article — or all of these, all at once. They are tech-neutral, using whatever works best for a given task.” —The Nichepaper Manifesto - Umair Haque - HarvardBusiness.org

“Writing that’s native to the web is different in ways that are crucial but subtle enough that you can miss them if you conceive of your audience as reading a printed product. The tone of good web writing grows out of email. It’s more direct, personal, colloquial, urgent, witty, efficient. It doesn’t waste your time. It reflects that engagement, responsiveness and haste of web surfers, as opposed to the more general passivity of print readers. It integrates the use of links into the creative and intellectual process as opposed to tacking them on afterwards. And it uses multimedia in an organic rather than an ornamental way.” —Eight questions for Jacob Weisberg | Democracy in America | Economist.com

“@citizennekane @ninanyc @codybrown - I’ve had this argument w/ all 3 of you at different times. This guy’s post is great: http://is.gd/1tWBf” —

Seems like a good example of the mindset of people that have disagreed with me on the Dear Bill Keller post.
